SD-19: This is where it’s at

despite the failure of senate democrats to legitimately contest the 2 seats necessary to rally a 2/3 lion’s share, the one capital that is up in spite of grabs, sd-19, is getting a group of attention. from capitol weekly:

if the capitol looks a morsel deserted this week, there’s a good use one’s head: some 200 pike workers experience headed into the ventura territory also in behalf of the hottest legislative battle of the year, pitting two late body members object of the senate seat held by tom mcclintock, who is running for congress.

Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson and Republican Tony Strickland are neck-and-neck in the 19th Senate District, a Republican stronghold that has experienced a recent surge in Democratic registrations. Political pros say the race is too close to call, and Senate leaders this week began pouring personnel into the zone to buttress the local campaigns. (Capitol Weekly 10/31/08)

Nonpareil

Ooh, you can bet there will be fun times in Ventura County this weekend! I mean what can possibly be more fun than 200 legislative staffers. Partying, knocking on some doors, you know general mayhem.

Hey I know somebody who is a fan of general mayhem. Yes Tony Strickland, I’m looking at you, Mr. Sly Trickster.

Hawaii Commits to 70% Renewable Energy by 2030

Hawaii plans on 70% renewable power generation by 2030 Hawaiian Electric Company, the state’s largest utility, has entered into an agreement with the state of Hawaii that could break the Islands’ reliance on fossil fuel by generating 70% of it energy from renewable sources for both ground transportation and electricity by 2030.

The plan includes agreeing to build no more coal-fired power plants, integrating 1,100 megawatts of renewable enegy into the grid, and converting existing generators to burn biofuels.

The agreement signed this month between the state and Hawaiian Electric is based on the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, a partnership launched last January between the federal government and the state of Hawaii. Administered by the U.S. Department of Energy, the stated goal of the project is for Hawaii to serve as the model of energy independence for other states to follow.

U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) says that energy independence for the state is essential due to the isolation of the central Pacific archipelago, making it particularly vulnerable to rising oil prices and uncertain supplies (Hawaii has no fossil fuel sources of its own).

Barack Obama talks about maybe losing

Looking comfortable and not falling asleep after nearly 22 months of almost nonstop campaigning, Barack Obama had an on-camera conversation with ABC last night.

Like every disciplined candidate, he touched on all the talking points he wants to get out there in the last few days.

Vince carter

Obama was asked about winning and said he hoped Democrats would draw the right lessons from that, if they also control Congress: namely that they need to take office with humility and not run roughshod as some political victors have after past elections.

Good luck controlling any partisan herd in the current Washington atmosphere.

Then, the freshman senator was asked about losing. Calling himself the “longest of longshots” at the beginning, way back on that chilly February 2007 day in Springfield, Ill., this is what Obama replied:

“I’m a relatively young man. You know, they say there’s no second acts in politics. But, you know, I think there are enough exceptions out there that I think I could envision returning to the Senate, and just doing some terrific work with the next president and the next Congress.”

A longer version of the interview is viewable here.

The post-election season begins

BY ANY number of indicators, the post-election season has already begun. Latest among the conservative punditry is the refrain that America is still a “centre-right” country, a warning to ascendant Democrats that they shouldn’t get too ambitious and lurch left. Peggy Noonan repeated the line in her column today, noting that 43%—the proportion of voters who prefer John McCain in recent polling—is quite a lot, some 52m people.

they are the beating kindliness of conservatism, and to watch most television is to forget they exist, for they are not shown much, except at rallies. but they are there, and this is a center-right realm, and numberless of them organize been pushing hard against the age for 40 years now, and more. representing some habits they have sensed that something large and stable is being swept away, possibly has been swept away, and yet you silent have to fight for it. they will not give up without a discord, and they will clear the way their way to the polls.

And they will be a rock-hard challenge to Mr. Obama if he wins.

This is the thing: If Mr. Obama wins, and governs as a moderate liberal, not veering left, not seeming to be the cap that pops off a kettle that’s been boiling for eight years, but governs to a degree, at least in general approach, as Bill Clinton did—as a moderate Democrat well aware of the terrain—he may know some success.

Ms Noonan and other Republicans might be aiming to prevent a Democratic tax viagra online-and-spend fest. But Barack Obama should be egging these conservative pundits on. Arguably the biggest challenge Mr Obama will face if he is elected will be a jubilantly powerful Democratic Congress, ready to do all the things they ever wanted to—from pumping money into urban areas to eliminating secret ballots in union elections. Things that a lot of Americans won’t like. Though it seems a tad unfair to expect Mr Obama to hew to the centre when George Bush ran right after squeaky-close elections, look how well that ended up, ultimately, for Mr Bush and the GOP. The centre is where Mr Obama should want to be.

The obvious counter-argument, of course, is that 2008 is an earth-shaking election, jumbling up the electoral map we have all become used to and reflecting an American public that is now more centre-left than centre-right. Perhaps. But a lot of that has to do with the coincidental implosion of the Republican Party and the financial crisis, rather than a drastic ideological shift from where the country was only four years ago.

Obama Drops Compliments, Talks Confidently On Economy

obama landed some sharp attacks in a colorado speech today on the economy. best of all, they were made without the use of disempowering, complimentary, qualifying homages to mccain.

Obama didn’t preface this bit by saying how much he honors John McCain’s service to America:

this is what happens when you receive seven years of incomes falling for the average worker while wall street is booming, and declare – as senator mccain did earlier this year – that we’ve made gargantuan progress economically beneath george bush. that is how you can reach the conclusion – as late as yesterday – that the fundamentals of the economy are strong.

Obama didn’t start qualify this graph with a paean to McCain’s time as a POW:

produce no mistake: my foe is running pro four more years of policies that will throw the economy further out of balance. his slight at derange in someone’s bailiwick would be more convincing if he wasn’t offering them more tax cuts. his muster for fiscal responsibility would be believable if he wasn’t in search more tax cuts for the wealthiest americans, and more of a trillion dollar war in iraq paid in regard to with deficit spending and borrowing from remote creditors peer china.

When Obama attacked McCain on leadership, thereby hitting right at the heart of McCain’s argument to be President, he didn’t preface the attack with an homage to McCain’s military record:

just today, senator mccain offered up the oldest washington stunt in the book – you pass the buck to a commission to research the problem. but here’s the thing – this isn’t 9/11. we know how we got into this foul up. what we need in the present climate is leadership that gets us out. i’ll provide it, john mccain won’t, and that’s the choice for the american people in this electing.

None of these attacks would have been improved by telling people about McCain’s time as a POW before landing the attacks. The absence of such compliments to McCain is refreshing, and conveys a real confidence from Obama. Back when Obama was prefacing all of his attacks on Obama with a statement on how much he deeply respects John McCain’s service to America, frankly it made what he said afterward sound like he was walking on eggshells. Honestly, apart from repeating McCain’s message, and apart from irritating many of his own supporters, paying tribute to John McCain before attacking him just made the criticisms that followed sound weak and wimpy. These attacks, by contrast, sound confident, on message, and sharp.

This might actually be a general tendency among Democrats. While most national Democrats seem to act like they are walking on eggshells whenever they talk about foreign policy or social values, they have historically always seemed more confident when discussing the economy. It really seems to me that most leading Democrats are convinced they are only the majority party when it comes to economic policy, but not when it comes to social values or foreign policy. Even if they are centrists, they all just seem so much more confident–even brash–when the focus in on economic issues.

Darden restaurants

I like Democrats when they talk like this. Makes me proud. Wish I would see this side of them more often.

Animal Crossing City Folk Given Pointless Australian Renaming [Animal Crossing: City Folk]

Great, another unnecessary name change for a Nintendo game in Australia! Earlier this year, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin was renamed Advance Wars: Dark Conflict down under, for no reason. Now, Animal Crossing: City Folk is getting the same treatment! The game’s listing on the Office of Film & Literature Classification has it titled Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City. Maybe “City Folk” sounded too American for Nintendo Australia. Maybe it sounded too much like “City Fuck” for the trigger-happy classification board. Who knows. We certainly don’t (Nintendo Australia didn’t respond to a “please explain”).
